Day 1

Our Friday, the first day of our trip, started at Abbey’s house. There we got in the mood for the long plane rides ahead, by watching Moana and eating an assortment of snack foods.  We took the Michigan Flyer to the airport, which felt like the fastest bus trip in history, thanks to the complimentary wifi, water bottles, and super comfortable seats. Besides a couple of short delays, are flights to Miami then San Pedro Sula went off without a hitch. However, once we landed in Honduras, we had a long wait in the customs line, followed by a not quite as long wait to exchange our money. Our drive to El Porvenir was a perfect introduction to Honduras, thanks to our friendly driver and the accompanying scenery of mountains, fields, and various farm animals. Once we arrived in El Porvenir, we set up our rooms and met some other volunteers for dinner. We ate very good baleadas, while we were told about the town and the projects we would be doing. To finish off the exciting day, we went back to our rooms, took showers, then went to bed. All things considered, our trip is off to a good start!

Our journey to Honduras has begun! We left Detroit bright and early at 6:30 am, and finally made it to El Porvenir, Atlantida 12 hours later at 6:30 pm. We had a great time interacting with people along the way, especially our van drivers who gave us a great introduction to Honduran culture. Look out for more blog posts this week to keep up on all the exciting and great work we are doing.
